The global requirement of decarbonization has placed solar photovoltaic PV systems on the frontline of the energy future However, unlocking the full techno economic potential of solar is a problem of optimization by nature, and this calls for sophisticated methods to bridge the gap between the theoretical potential and the achievable performance In this paper, there is a coherent and thorough review of state of the art optimization methods applied across the PV value chain We present a new classification that separates optimization problems into four distinct categories: ۱ strategic techno economic planning and sizing, ۲ physical design, configuration, and location, ۳ operational control and grid integration, and ۴ core model improvement Our literature review recognizes significant evolutionary trends, including a clear move away from single objective, deterministic towards more resilient multi objective and stochastic formulations that explicitly consider competing objectives and uncertainty An important finding is the natural conflict between local device level optimization such as Maximum Power Point Tracking and system level, coordinated control needs to deliver grid stability and prevent energy curtailment at penetration levels above a certain threshold New meta heuristic algorithm dominance for solving complex, non convex problems like PV model parameter estimation and the emergence of surrogate assisted approaches to accelerate computationally demanding design processes are other focuses of the survey An enduring and stubborn deficit achieved in different application fields is the need for more co optimization of PV with energy storage systems ESS in an integrated manner to address the innate intermittency problem and generation load imbalance in time This review consolidates the fragmented field of PV optimization, presenting a systematic review of current trends, existing challenges, and future avenues of research required to advance solar energy technology
