Hydraulic equipment has wide applications in many industrial and laboratory fields in which proper accuracy and response and high power to weight ratio are of importance To achieve an optimal performance, accurate modelling of the key components of a hydraulic circuit may be contributory An accurate representation of relief valves, as the main safety component of the hydraulic circuits and also as an actuator in many cases is crucial In this paper, steady state behavior of a pilot operated relief valve has been studied and the discharge rate of the valve in terms of the system pressure has been investigated An analytical representation and a numerical computational fluid dynamics approach have been developed to determine the system characteristics In addition, a hydraulic circuit has been designed and experimental results have shown a proper conformity with the analytical and numerical results Both numerical and analytical models, have shown that the valve is not linearly proportional to the system pressure In this work the flow rate reduction caused by the nonlinear characteristics, has been studied and the effect of the second stage of the pilot operated relief valve on the attenuation of the mentioned phenomenon has been illustrated
