This study investigates the impact of Y₂O₃ nanoparticle addition on the microstructure and properties of laser clad Inconel 718 superalloy The results demonstrate that incorporating Y₂O₃ nanoparticles into Inconel 718 and applying laser cladding significantly enhance the microstructure, reducing common defects such as cracks and porosity The optimal Y₂O₃ content was determined to be 1 wt%, as this composition resulted in a more uniform microstructure, finer grain refinement, and a defect free coating However, exceeding 1 5 wt% led to the formation of thermal defects and cracks, underscoring the superalloy’s sensitivity to excessive additive concentrations Additionally, the homogeneous distribution of Y₂O₃ nanoparticles effectively suppressed grain boundary movement, contributing to enhanced hardness and improved wear resistance The refined microstructure and reduction in defects also played a crucial role in increasing oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making the coated alloy more suitable for extreme operating conditions Overall, laser cladding with Y₂O₃ nanoparticles presents an innovative approach to improving the mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties of Inconel 718 This enhancement expands the potential applications of the alloy in high performance industries such as aerospace, energy, and oil and gas, where superior material characteristics are essential Future research should focus on optimizing process parameters and investigating the long term performance of Y₂O₃ reinforced coatings in aggressive service environments
