Synechocystis sp PCC6803 is popular photosynthetic model cyanobacteria for study of response and acclimation to different type of abiotic stresses While most of the previous researches studied the cultivation of Synechocystis for biofuel production, in this study, the potential of this cyanobacteria for biofuel production through hydrothermal liquefaction has been studied A prototype high pressure temperature reactor was used for hydrothermal liquefaction experiments The result indicated that at a reaction temperature of 310 oC, a pressure of 96 bar, and a reaction time of 90 min, 37% of the biomass was converted to biocrude oil with a heating value of 34 78 MJ/kg Gas chromatography analysis indicated that the biocrude oil mainly consisted of cyclic nitrogen compounds, branched hydrocarbons, fatty acids, straight and branched oxygenates, aromatic compounds, and heterocyclic compounds Comparison of these results with biocrude oil from other feed stocks indicated that Synechocystis biomass can be a suitable feedstock for a HTL process
