Agricultural drainage water management ADWM is an existential imperative for global water security, particularly in water stressed arid and semi arid regions where conventional methods are unsustainable Unmanaged drainage, rich in salts, nutrients, and agrochemicals, poses diverse global threats, including soil salinization in arid zones e g , Iran's Khuzestan , and eutrophication from nitrate and phosphate runoff in humid climates e g , the U S Midwest , leading to severe environmental, economic, and social degradation This study systematically compares conventional ADWM free draining, dilution which prioritize effluent disposal over sustainability, with advanced Drainage Water Recycling DWR methods DWR technologies, including Reservoir Storage, Controlled Drainage CD , and passive Biological Treatment bioreactors and wetlands , are shown to dramatically increase water use efficiency, conserve valuable nutrients, and achieve pollutant removal efficiencies exceeding 90% We propose an integrated, optimal solution for high salinity contexts, centered on combining CD and Biological Treatment with AI/IoT Driven Management This synergy enables real time, predictive control of water tables and precision irrigation, maximizing both water and nutrient recovery Transitioning from disposal centric methods to DWR, supported by smart technology, is crucial for turning agricultural wastewater into a reliable, non conventional water source, thereby mitigating chronic water scarcity, particularly in nations like Iran
