Aim: Infertility is a disease of the reproductive system characterized by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse Oral diseases are a group of chronic infections originated primarily from dental caries It is hypothesized that a direct relationship exists between dental health status and male factor infertility The aim of the present study was to assess the association between dental health status and male factor infertility Materials and Methods: We evaluated correlations between periodontal infection parameters and the results of sperm analysis of men with idiopathic infertility The study population consisted of 75 men otherwise healthy men attending the clinic for sperm analysis with a history of idiopathic infertility The quality of sperm was assessed according to WHO criteria Patients received a clinical periodontal examination Results: Among the 95 participants, 38% had oligozoospermia, 28% had asthenozoospermia, 16% had cryptozoospermiaThe patients were diagnosed with either gingivitis 40% or periodontitis 48% , whereas the remaining 12% were classified as ‘‘periodontally healthy’’ Normospermia was attributed to 37%, oligozoospermia to 48% and azoospermia to15% of these patients There were 55 subjects with subnormal counts of which ten were found to be azoospermic, 41 oligospermic and 25 normospermic controls A positive association was found between periodontitis and subnormal sperm count in only one age group but statistically significant association was found between poor oral hygiene and subnormal sperm count across all age groups Conclusion: There appears to be a significant association between poor oral and subnormal sperm count There also appears to an association between chronic periodontitis and subnormal sperm count These relationships warrant further investigation
