During the last decades, the interest of using single bioreactors for the simultaneous carbon and nutrients removal has enhanced The requirement of large volume and high energy consumption are the main disadvantages of conventional biological nutrient removal The review of research progress may provide an insight for the development of single bioreactors to wastewater treatment plants In this short review, the performance of single bioreactors for providing anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic zones using different approaches was discussed and compared New generation of air lift bioreactor could be a proper choice in terms of CNP utilization rate, energy consumption and easy operation
