چکیده مقاله
This work evaluates the critical role of precise free field boundary condition simulation in the seismic evaluation of concrete gravity dams, with Koyna Dam analyzed as a representative example The adopted framework utilizes a domain reduction technique for foundational representation, integrated with a direct finite element FE methodology to determine effective seismic forces EEFs Two approaches are compared: a comprehensive method incorporating full boundary EEFs and a simplified approach neglecting lateral components, representing common engineering practice Using recorded ground motions from the 1967 Koyna earthquake processed through time domain deconvolution, the analysis demonstrates that simplified method neglecting lateral EEFS significantly alter dynamic response predictions by artificially dampening wave propagation effects The complete EEFS model properly captures wave scattering mechanisms and stress distribution patterns, while simplified approach yields non conservative performance estimates The findings highlight that accurate seismic evaluation requires complete boundary EEF implementation to properly account for radiation damping effects, despite increased computational demands This research challenges current simplification trends in dam engineering practice and emphasizes the critical importance of rigorous wave propagation modeling for safety assessments
