As effective water and wastewater management WWM plays a critical role in sustainable development, the use of sustainability assessment methods in this field is increasing rapidly Indicator based frameworks are among the most widely used methods for assessing the sustainability of WWM This research aims to identify and review the common sustainability indicators for WWM in small scale communities To provide the list of commonly recognized sustainability indicators for small scale WWM, 48 related papers were selected The indicators gathered from these studies were screened, and the most frequently used indicators were determined for each sustainability dimension The results showed that the number of indicators used over 10 times within each sustainability dimension was: social 8 , environmental 6 , technical 5 , and economic 3 , respectively Although institutional indicators were observed less frequently, an indicator stakeholder education and awareness programs with 14 repetitions emerged as a commonly recognized sustainability indicator repeated more than 10 times Finally, the definitions and details of each commonly used indicator were provided These indicators serve as a practical tool for planning, operating, and evaluating diverse aspects of water and wastewater management in small scale communities
