چکیده مقاله
The hydrogeochemical characteristics of Lake Urmia, a hypersaline lake in northwestern Iran, have undergone significant changes in recent decades due to consistently high evaporation rates and reduced freshwater inflows This study analyzed water and sediment samples collected from different regions of the lake in 2024 and 2025 Major ion concentrations such as Na , Cl , Mg2 and total dissolved solids TDS in the lake water were measured In addition, previous data from 2009 onward were incorporated for comparison and historical analysis Moreover, a simplified method is proposed to estimate NaCl concentration from TDS measurements, offering a cost effective and efficient approach for salinity assessment in similar hypersaline environments The results indicate a complete transition from mixed water types reported between 2009 and 2016 to a dominant Na Cl type by 2025 Due to desiccation, the lake's mean salinity increased from 271 g/L in May 2024 to more than 450 g/L by June 2025 NaCl constitutes 90% of the total salts in water, confirming its predominance Sediment analyses reveal that lakebed deposits are dominated by halite NaCl, 98% , with minor contributions from other minerals such as aragonite and sylvite These findings highlight the lake's critical transformation, emphasizing the need for reliable monitoring and urgent restoration measures
