The aim of this paper is to predict transverse cracks in flexible pavements using effective variables, with Washington state, as a case study Transverse cracks may result from various factors affecting pavement behavior and quality Low temperature gradients are the main cause, leading to expansion and contraction of pavement materials, while air voids AV , heavy rainfall, and freeze thaw cycles can accelerate cracking Traffic data is excluded, assuming cracks form independently Transverse cracks reduce smoothness, create surface discontinuities, and increase International Roughness Index IRI values, affecting pavement performance and driving safety Data from 14 pavement sections were collected from Long Term Pavement Performance LTPP database Among 10 analyzed variables, multiple linear regression showed higher predictive capability R2 = 0 89 compared to basic regression R2 = 0 69 , identifying mean IRI, AV, and asphalt content as the most significant predictors Regression validity tests indicated acceptable multicollinearity with variance inflation factors VIF of 9 19, 6 01, and 10 30 for mean IRI, AV under wheel loading, and asphalt content, respectively, while a Durbin Watson statistic of 2 46 confirmed no significant autocorrelation in residuals These findings highlight that not all commonly assumed factors strongly influence cracks, enabling targeted maintenance strategies that optimize interventions and enhance road durability and safety
