چکیده مقاله
Surge arresters are essential components in high voltage transmission substations, designed to protect equipment from transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes and switching operations Their proper functioning ensures insulation coordination and prevents catastrophic failures of transformers, circuit breakers, and busbars However, the performance of surge arresters can be compromised by repeated high energy surges, improper installation, aging, or insufficient insulation margins This paper investigates the physical mechanisms of overvoltage generation, evaluates the role of metal oxide varistor MOV arresters, and presents case studies of lightning induced failures in ۲۳۰/۶۳ kV substations in Iran It also examines key design, installation, and maintenance factors influencing arrester performance and offers recommendations for improving surge protection reliability in transmission networks
