Although the history tunneling goes back to more than 4000 5000 years ago, the excavation and installation of support system have become quite advanced in recent years Tunnel construction is widespread in association with social demands in various countries While the earthquakes, large overburden, TBM excavation present new issues todeal with, the advances in rock mass evaluations and monitoring make engineers to overcome the issues and make better decisions for safe and economic construction of tunnels The author presents some recent issues and advances in tunneling and discusses how to cope with the recent issues and implement advances in tunneling in this paper
