The excessive content of red mud due to production of alumina based on Bayer process is one of the major environmental challenges In the current article, a novel process was described for the extraction of iron from red mud according to the low temperature reduction technology Ammonium sulfate was applied to reduce the residue followed by leaching in the acidic environment The concentration of iron ion was determined by atomic adsorption to identify the proper conditions for the reduction and leaching steps By changing the reduction temperature, it is found that the best performance can be obtained by heat treatment at 450 °C Finally, it can be concluded that the introduced technique can be considered as potential candidate for the iron extraction from red mud
