چکیده مقاله
Produced water PW from oil and gas operations consists of an ecosystem of unregulated complex organic and inorganic pollutants, leading to environmental and regulatory challenges I cataloged and synthesized recent literature 2023 2025 focusing on the treatment and management strategies Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed were used for article retrieval, and the studies were screened and selected following a PRISMA framework strategy This resulted in the inclusion of 17 studies of sufficient quality Data were captured on the type of treatment system, target contaminants, removal efficiency, cost, scalability, environmental safety, and reuse potential Ex situ approaches dominated the literature 12/17 , while the survey of literature material had variable removal performance across contaminant type for the biological treatments, LLE with green solvents, adsorption, and the physical treatments of flotation and coagulation 96% and 99% removal of phenolic organics and heavy metals were achieved, respectively, while low/moderate ≈ 72 83% treatment occurred for salinity, TDS, and hydrocarbons Environmentally safe biological and microalgae based systems promoted resource recovery and the biofuel value of systems, but were limited to high retention times and control of systems Rapid and selective removal was offered by physical and chemical methods, the latter more expensive Combining/hybridized and staged treatment trains are expected to deliver optimum cost, efficiency, and sustainability
