The growing global water crisis has intensified the need for sustainable and cost effective freshwater production methods that impose minimal stress on natural resources Among various desalination technologies, freeze desalination has recently regained attention due to the emergence of new low cost cooling sources such as cryogenic systems and radiative cooling Numerical modeling through Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD provides valuable insights into the coupled heat and mass transfer phenomena governing this process In this study, three container materials; Oxygen free Copper, Aluminum alloy 1060, and Aluminum alloy 5456, were examined to evaluate their effects on ice production rate and ice salinity during the freeze desalination process The results showed that oxygen free copper, with its higher thermal conductivity, achieved the greatest ice formation within the same freezing duration, producing 371 g of ice from 628 g of initial seawater This amount was approximately 1 17 times greater than that obtained with aluminum alloy 1060 and 1 42 times greater than that of aluminum alloy 5456 The analysis of the final ice salinity showed that aluminum alloy 5456 produced the lowest ice salinity, with a value of 3 15%, which is 0 9% lower than aluminum alloy 1060 3 18% and 4 8% lower than oxygen free copper 3 31% This improvement in ice purity is attributed to the more controlled cooling process resulting from its lower thermal conductivity, which allows for enhanced salt rejection during the freezing process In conclusion, thermal conductivity has a significant impact on the overall performance of the freeze desalination process Understanding this effect can provide valuable insights for optimizing system design, ultimately contributing to the enhancement and practical implementation of freeze desalination technology
