Overtaking is one of the most complex and high demanding tasks of drivinginvolving the coordination of multiple cognitive and physiological processes Whilst Hegeman 2008 simply identifies overtaking as an activity driversperform with the intention of passing a slower leading vehicle, the performanceof this driving task is nonetheless frequently unsuccessful, with the intention topass a leading vehicle prematurely aborted such as to avoid involvement in acrash or truncated as a result of a crash In this study it was essential to reproduceenvironments in which the decision to overtake would be the likely outcome ofdriver’s deliberations The simulator design included situations in which researchparticipants driving on a single carriageway two lane rural road were faced withvarious scenarios in which a lead vehicle was driving at slower speeds Thesescenarios simulated real driving situations in which the driving environmentencouraged drivers to perform the overtake The overtake is a crucial themes inthis study because of the behavioural complexity involved and consequentlyextra time and attention has been paid to make realistic scenarios that duplicatereal driving conditions
