Background: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD often exhibit difficulties in social communication and emotional processing Recent technological advances have enabled the use of Virtual Reality VR and Eye Tracking ET as innovative tools for assessing these impairments in a more dynamic and ecologically valid manner Objective: This systematic review aims to synthesize empirical studies that utilized VR and/or ET to evaluate social and emotional functioning in children and adolescents with ASD Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for articles published between January 2010 and December 2024 Inclusion criteria required empirical studies involving participants under 18 years of age with a diagnosis of ASD and the use of VR and/or ET technologies in assessing social or emotional processing Results: Thirty two studies met the inclusion criteria Findings reveal that children with ASD consistently show atypical gaze patterns, reduced social attention, and altered emotional recognition when assessed using VR and ET VR scenarios allowed for the presentation of complex social interactions, while ET provided precise gaze metrics The integration of these tools facilitated the identification of subtle deficits not always observable through traditional measures Conclusions: The combined use of VR and ET holds significant promise in enhancing our understanding and assessment of social emotional processing in children with ASD Further standardization, cross platform integration, and longitudinal designs are needed to optimize their clinical and educational applications Keywords: Autism Spectrum Disorder; Virtual Reality; Eye Tracking; Social Cognition; Emotional Processing; Children; Systematic Review
