Background: Feelings of social isolation are strongly associated with suicidal tendencies among young people with depressive symptoms, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social isolation and suicidal tendencies in young adults with depressive symptoms, examining the mediating roles of feelings of overload and failure to belong Methods: This fundamental research employed a descriptive correlational design using path analysis The statistical population included all young people aged ۱۸–۳۰ years with depressive symptoms attending psychology clinics and counseling centers in Zanjan during ۲۰۲۴–۲۰۲۵ A total of ۲۱۵ participants ۱۳۸ female, ۷۷ male were selected using convenience sampling Data collection instruments included the Social Isolation Scale SIS , Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation BSSI , Overload Scale OS , and Failure to Belong Scale FBS Depressive symptoms were confirmed using the Beck Depression Inventory II BDI II Descriptive statistics were analyzed using SPSS version ۲۶, and path analysis was conducted using AMOS version ۲۶ Results: Direct effects of social isolation on suicidal tendencies β = ۰ ۴۶, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ were significant and positive Social isolation significantly predicted feelings of overload β = ۰ ۵۳, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ and failure to belong β = ۰ ۴۹, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ The indirect effect of social isolation on suicidal tendencies through feelings of overload β = ۰ ۲۳, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ and through failure to belong β = ۰ ۲۱, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ was significant The model explained ۵۸% of the variance in suicidal tendencies Conclusion: Feelings of overload and failure to belong serve as crucial mediators in the relationship between social isolation and suicidal tendencies in young people with depressive symptoms Interventions targeting perceived burden and belongingness may reduce suicide risk in this vulnerable population
