Background: Major Depressive Disorder MDD symptoms and impulsive behaviors are significant predictors of low self efficacy among adolescents, yet the mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MDD symptoms and impulsive behaviors with self efficacy, examining the mediating roles of emotional self regulation and working memory Methods: This fundamental research employed a descriptive correlational design using path analysis The statistical population included all high school students in Tehran during the ۲۰۲۴ ۲۰۲۵ academic year A total of ۲۱۵ adolescents ۱۱۸ female, ۹۷ male were selected using cluster random sampling Data collection instruments included the Beck Depression Inventory II BDI II , Barratt Impulsiveness Scale BIS ۱۱ , Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale DERS , Working Memory Index WMI , and General Self Efficacy Scale GSES ۱۰ Descriptive statistics were analyzed using SPSS version ۲۶, and path analysis was conducted using AMOS version ۲۶ Results: Direct effects of MDD symptoms on self efficacy β = ۰ ۴۱, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ and impulsive behaviors on self efficacy β = ۰ ۳۲, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ were significant and negative MDD symptoms significantly predicted emotional self regulation difficulties β = ۰ ۵۲, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ and lower working memory β = ۰ ۳۶, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ Impulsive behaviors similarly predicted emotional self regulation difficulties β = ۰ ۳۵, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ and lower working memory β = ۰ ۳۱, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ The indirect effect of MDD symptoms on self efficacy through emotional self regulation β = ۰ ۲۱, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ and through working memory β = ۰ ۱۲, P < ۰ ۰۰۱ was significant Impulsive behaviors showed significant indirect effects on self efficacy through both mediators Conclusion: Emotional self regulation and working memory serve as crucial mediators in the relationship between MDD symptoms and impulsivity with self efficacy Interventions targeting emotion regulation skills and working memory enhancement may improve self efficacy beliefs in adolescents with depressive and impulsive features
