This study aims to investigate the role of academic success in shaping academic aspirations, while also examining the mediating role of self differentiation in this relationship Given the importance of understanding academic aspirations in determining students’ educational trajectories and the influence of self differentiation on learning motivation, this research explores these concepts and their educational implications The findings of this study can contribute to a better understanding of how academic success affects students’ aspirations and inform educational policy making The research employed a cross sectional correlational design The statistical population comprised all second level secondary school students in Zanjan during the 2021–2022 academic year, from which 530 students were selected using cluster random sampling The study utilised the Academic Aspirations Scale Hassani et al , 2014 , the Academic Success Scale Salehi, 2013 , and the Self Differentiation Scale Skowron & Friedlander, 1998 Data were analysed using SPSS V23 and PLS software Structural equation modelling SEM was applied to test the research hypotheses The findings indicated that the proposed model had an acceptable fit The results demonstrated a significant direct effect of academic success on self differentiation and academic aspirations among secondary school students in Zanjan p < 0 05 However, the direct impact of self differentiation on academic aspirations was not significant p > 0 05 Moreover, the indirect effect of academic success on academic aspirations through self differentiation was also not significant p > 0 05
