چکیده مقاله
Neuroticism, a key personality trait in the Big Five model, reflects a tendency to experience negative emotions and is a known risk factor for various psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression While traditionally considered a stable trait, recent evidence has questioned whether neuroticism also involves variability in emotional experiences Some studies suggest that neuroticism is linked to more intense negative emotions but not necessarily to emotional variability, whereas newer research shows that individuals with high neuroticism exhibit greater fluctuations in negative affect This study aimed to clarify the role of neuroticism variability in predicting the development of psychological disorders beyond average neuroticism levels and baseline symptoms We conducted a longitudinal study involving approximately 2,500 adults aged 18 to 65 Participants completed personality inventories to assess trait neuroticism and reported daily negative emotions over six months Neuroticism variability was measured as the intraindividual fluctuation in daily negative affect The onset of psychological disorders, such as major depression and generalized anxiety, was assessed after 12 months using structured clinical interviews Findings confirmed that higher average neuroticism significantly predicted future mood and anxiety disorders Importantly, individuals with greater variability in negative affect faced an additional 25–30% increased risk of developing these disorders, independent of mean neuroticism and prior symptoms No interaction with life stress was found, suggesting that variability itself is a distinct risk factor These results highlight the importance of considering emotional fluctuations within neuroticism when assessing mental health risks and developing targeted interventions to stabilize mood and reduce vulnerability
