چکیده مقاله
The cement industry is one of the most energy intensive and environmentally impactful sectors worldwide, relying heavily on fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum coke, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion Refuse Derived Fuel RDF , produced from the combustible fraction of municipal solid waste and industrial residues, has emerged as a sustainable alternative fuel that offers both environmental and economic benefits This study provides a comprehensive review of RDF utilization in cement production, focusing on its technical, economic, and environmental implications within a sustainable development framework The primary objective of this review is to evaluate the feasibility, performance, and potential of RDF as a substitute for conventional fossil fuels in cement kilns The methodology involves a detailed analysis of published literature, industrial case studies, and best practices, examining RDF composition, fuel preparation, kiln integration, emission control, economic viability, and sustainability outcomes Emphasis is placed on modern preheater precalciner rotary kilns, which demonstrate high adaptability to alternative fuels, and on strategies for overcoming technical, regulatory, and operational challenges Findings indicate that RDF can effectively replace 20–60% of conventional fuel energy without compromising clinker quality or kiln stability when appropriate preprocessing, feeding systems, and combustion control strategies are implemented Economically, RDF reduces operational costs by lowering fossil fuel consumption and, in some cases, generating revenue from municipal waste disposal agreements Policy incentives, carbon credits, and supportive regulatory frameworks further enhance financial feasibility Environmentally, RDF co processing contributes to significant reductions in CO₂ and other air pollutants, diverts waste from landfills, promotes circular economy principles, and supports multiple Sustainable Development Goals SDGs , including climate action, responsible consumption, and sustainable industrial development Despite these benefits, challenges remain, including variability in RDF quality, potential emissions of trace contaminants, equipment wear, and public perception issues Advanced monitoring systems, technological innovation, standardized quality metrics, and stakeholder engagement are crucial to overcoming these barriers
