چکیده مقاله
Undefended urban spaces intensify feelings of insecurity when they lack visibility, territoriality, and active social presence This study evaluates vulnerable spaces in the historic Heshmat al Doleh neighborhood of Tehran using CPTED Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles The research is applied and descriptive analytical, using a mixed methods approach Data were collected through a CPTED based checklist and a user questionnaire, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis Results show that “Activity and Function of Space” 44% compliance and “Territoriality” 47% compliance are the weakest dimensions, indicating low land use diversity, visual deterioration, and lack of stewardship “Natural Access Control” performed best 70% compliance , though it did not compensate for poor surveillance and inactive spaces The study concludes that insecurity stems from spatial abandonment rather than high crime incidence Enhancing natural surveillance, activating public spaces, and reinforcing territoriality can significantly improve perceived safety and urban livability
