چکیده مقاله
Core Problem: The progressive desiccation of inland lakes has emerged as a critical environmental and public health challenge worldwide Lake Urmia in Iran and Owens Lake in California, USA, have experienced significant drying over recent decades, resulting in frequent dust storms enriched with particulate matter and toxic heavy metals Such environmental degradation may contribute to elevated rates of chronic kidney disease and kidney related cancers, yet comparative assessments across international contexts remain scarce Urban planning and environmental management play a critical role in mediating human exposure to toxic dust and mitigating public health risks in affected regions Approach: This study employs a comparative environmental health framework integrating satellite imagery, dust emission data, heavy metal concentration measurements, and regional epidemiological statistics Spatial temporal correlations were evaluated between particulate matter exposure PM 2 5 and PM 10 and renal and oncological health outcomes in populations residing near the dried lakebeds Key variables include dust composition, heavy metal load, population density, and local mitigation practices Key Findings: Preliminary analysis indicates elevated dust exposure associated with heavy metals such as Ni, Cu, Pb, and Cd in both regions Communities surrounding dried lakebeds exhibit higher incidences of chronic kidney disease and kidney related cancers compared to low exposure reference areas Contrasts in environmental management and healthcare infrastructure between Iran and the USA modulate health outcomes, demonstrating the critical role of mitigation strategies Impact: These findings emphasize the urgent need for integrated environmental and public health policies in arid and semi arid regions Comparative insights from Lake Urmia and Owens Lake provide evidence that wetland preservation and dust control are essential for preventing kidney and cancer morbidity, highlighting a globally relevant model for environmental health interventions
