چکیده مقاله
Purpose: Steel production, as one of the main pillars of industrial development, accounts for 7–9% of global greenhouse gas emissions and remains a major consumer of energy and water Addressing these environmental burdens is essential for transitioning toward sustainable steelmaking This review investigates carbon and water footprints and other critical environmental impacts of steel production through Life Cycle Assessment LCA The study also highlights existing scientific gaps, including insufficient localized data and limited socio economic quantification in steel related LCAs, particularly in developing countries Methods: A review approach was applied by examining international LCA studies conducted according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards The analysis covered multiple steel production routes, utilizing LCA tools such as SimaPro, GaBi, and openLCA along with major databases including Ecoinvent, ELCD, and USEtox Key environmental indicators, especially carbon and water footprints, were compared across regions, with particular emphasis on Iran Conclusion: To enhance sustainability, Iran must develop localized LCA databases, standardize evaluation methods, and adopt advanced technologies such as green hydrogen and AOP based wastewater treatment Improved data transparency, international collaboration, and interdisciplinary training are crucial for transforming LCA from a reporting tool into an effective decision making framework supporting sustainable steel industry development
