چکیده مقاله
Purpose: Water contamination caused by the discharge of dye laden industrial effluents poses a serious environmental threat due to the persistence and toxicity of aromatic dyes such as Rhodamine B RhB Conventional wastewater treatment processes often fail to remove these recalcitrant pollutants effectively This study aimed to develop a green and efficient photocatalyst based on titanium dioxide TiO₂ modified with carbon quantum dots CQDs derived from plastic waste, addressing both dye degradation and plastic valorization challenges The research sought to enhance the visible light activity of TiO₂ through surface modification and explore the sustainable use of polymeric waste as a carbon source for CQD synthesis Methods: CQDs were synthesized from waste via a hydrothermal carbonization process using a natural acid medium TiO₂ nanoparticles were recovered and purified from Claus process residues and subsequently modified with varying CQD loadings 0 05–0 8 wt% to form CQD/TiO₂ nanocomposites The materials were characterized by XRD, FTIR, FE SEM, EDX, PL, and UV–Vis DRS analyses The photocatalytic performance was evaluated through RhB degradation under visible light irradiation, and the effects of pH, catalyst dosage, CQD content, and reaction time were systematically investigated Results: Structural analyses confirmed the formation of pure anatase TiO₂ with spherical morphology 40–50 nm and successful anchoring of CQDs through oxygenated surface groups C=O, C–O, and –OH The band gap energy decreased from 3 2 to 3 0 eV, extending absorption into the visible region The optimized 0 5 wt% CQD/TiO₂ composite achieved over 80% RhB degradation within 60 minutes under visible light, compared with ~30% for pristine TiO₂ Conclusion: The incorporation of plastic waste derived CQDs significantly enhanced the optical response and photocatalytic efficiency of TiO₂ This study introduces a sustainable, low cost, and environmentally friendly approach for wastewater treatment, offering a dual benefit of dye degradation and plastic waste valorization
