چکیده مقاله
Milk packaging strongly influences the environmental footprint of the dairy supply chain Despite extensive research on milk production, the life cycle impacts of different packaging materials, particularly greenhouse gas GHG emissions, remain underexplored This study evaluates and compares the environmental performance of three common milk packaging polyethylene terephthalate PET plastic bottles, single use glass bottles, and cellulose based cartons across their full life cycle A cradle to grave life cycle assessment LCA was conducted using SimaPro 9 0, with inventory data from the Ecoinvent v3 database and local industry sources The functional unit was one liter of ready to drink milk delivered to the consumer Three stages were analyzed: production, transportation and distribution, and waste management The ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint H method was applied, focusing on global warming potential GWP Waste management scenarios included recycling, landfilling, and controlled incineration, reflecting typical practices in Iran Results show that glass packaging generated the highest GHG emissions during production, while cellulose based cartons had the lowest In distribution, packaging weight and volume strongly influenced emissions, and in waste management, cellulose and glass outperformed PET due to recyclability and energy recovery potential Overall, cellulose cartons had the lowest total life cycle GHG emissions, glass the highest, and PET intermediate Material selection, lightweight design, and effective recycling are critical to reducing milk packaging’s carbon footprint Cellulose based cartons offer the most environmentally favorable profile under proper sourcing and recycling, providing guidance for policymakers, manufacturers, and consumers
