Introduction: Suicide is a serious public health problem, with 817,000 people worldwide ending their lives annually Naghavi, 2019; World Health Organization, 2021 The World Health Organization WHO estimates that suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29 years World Health Organization, 2022 The prevalence of mental health disorders and suicidality in our youth is on the rise Health, 2024 Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment of individuals at risk of suicide is the main strategy for prevention Group, 2018 Studies have shown a strong relationship between health status, physical activity, sports participation, and physical fitness level The view that participation in physical activities and sports is a protective factor against stress, depression, and other behaviors is gaining traction among health professionals and policymakers Ferron, Narring, Cauderay, & Michaud, 1999 Exercise can reduce emotional tension and act as a buffer against stressful events Furthermore, involvement in regular sports programs may lead to a sense of mastery and increased self esteem Additionally, participating in sports groups can provide social interactions and strengthen social support Sagatun, Sogaard, Bjertness, Selmer, & Heyerdahl, 2007 Research conducted in sports communities has shown mixed evidence regarding the impact of sports participation on mental health Sparagana et al , 2025 Roh et al 2024 found that sustained participation in physical activity is associated with positive mental health outcomes, such that as the frequency of physical activity exceeding 60 minutes and strength training increases, the rate of suicidal behaviors decreases In contrast, other studies have indicated mental health risks associated with sports participation DiFiori et al , 2014; He et al , 2018; Logan et al , 2019 In addition to environmental and personal characteristics that affect mental health, sport specific variables such as team sports versus individual sports and level of specialization also significantly influence the differences in mental health outcomes among adolescent athletes Sparagana et al , 2025 Participation in team sports compared to individual sports during adolescence is associated with fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and overall improved psychosocial well being in adulthood Fernandes et al , 2024 Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the protective role of physical activity and sports participation in reducing adolescent suicide Methodology: This systematic review was developed with the aim of investigating the protective role of physical activity and sports participation in reducing adolescent suicide To execute a comprehensive and systematic search process, a strategy was designed by combining main keywords such as 'sports participation and suicide,' 'physical activity and suicide,' and 'adolescent suicide and sport ' The search was conducted across five authoritative scientific databases, including Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and Scopus, to ensure that all relevant empirical evidence was retrieved The timeframe for the studies reviewed was set from 2002 to 2025, focusing on empirical research articles that examined the relationship between any type of physical activity and suicide related behaviors such as suicidal ideation or attempts ; previous review articles, case reports, or studies focused on adults were excluded from the review Ultimately, this strategy yielded 12 articles selected for in depth study and review After extracting key data, including study characteristics, research design, measurement tools, and statistical results, the data were finally analyzed through a structured narrative synthesis due to potential variability in methodologies and measurement instruments This approach aimed to comprehensively explain and present common patterns and the potential protective mechanisms of physical activity against adolescent suicide Findings: Findings Strong but complex evidence indicates the protective effect of physical activities, particularly sports participation, in reducing suicidal tendencies and behaviors among adolescents These findings can be categorized into several main themes: Table 1: The protective role of sports activity in reducing adolescent suicide Finding Theme 1 General and Comprehensive Protective Effect Key Finding Summary Significant reduction in the risk of suicide and suicidal behaviors Detailed Conditions, Notes, and Mechanisms Protection against: 1 Completed suicide consistent effect 2 Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in the past year 2 Impact of Continuity and Discontinuation of Sport Continuous participation throughout adolescence provides the Strong Protective Factor: Remaining active in sports throughout adolescence middle school and high school Risk Factor: Discontinuing sport after middle
