چکیده مقاله
The transition toward sustainable development requires a fundamental transformation in the way energy is produced, transmitted, stored, and consumed The growing concerns associated with climate change, environmental degradation, fossil fuel depletion, energy insecurity, and volatile energy markets have accelerated the global transition toward renewable energy systems Solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and sustainable bioenergy have demonstrated significant potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and diversify energy supply However, the increasing penetration of variable renewable energy sources also creates technical and operational challenges associated with intermittency, uncertainty, grid stability, and the temporal mismatch between energy generation and demand Smart energy storage systems have emerged as a critical solution for addressing these challenges By integrating electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical storage technologies with digital platforms, artificial intelligence, forecasting algorithms, sensors, communication networks, and automated control systems, smart storage can enhance flexibility, reliability, resilience, and the economic value of renewable energy systems This study investigates the potential of renewable energy and smart energy storage systems in advancing sustainable development through an integrative and analytical review The study examines the major renewable energy technologies and compares their capabilities, limitations, environmental implications, and roles within future energy systems It also analyzes a range of energy storage technologies, including lithium ion batteries, sodium ion batteries, flow batteries, pumped storage hydropower, thermal energy storage, compressed air systems, and hydrogen based storage Particular attention is given to the role of artificial intelligence, smart grids, digital twins, predictive analytics, and distributed energy management systems in improving the performance of energy storage infrastructure The findings indicate that renewable energy and storage should not be considered as independent technologies Their greatest potential emerges when they are integrated within a broader energy ecosystem that includes smart grids, transmission infrastructure, flexible demand, energy efficiency, sector coupling, and supportive governance Batteries can provide rapid response and short duration flexibility, whereas thermal storage, pumped hydropower, hydrogen, and other long duration technologies may address different temporal and operational requirements The sustainability of these systems, however, depends on responsible mineral supply chains, lifecycle management, recycling, cybersecurity, affordability, public participation, and equitable access to energy technologies The paper proposes an integrated framework for sustainable renewable energy deployment consisting of five interconnected dimensions: resource assessment, technology portfolio design, smart digital management, lifecycle sustainability, and institutional governance The study concludes that the combination of diversified renewable resources and intelligent energy storage systems can make a substantial contribution to climate mitigation, energy security, economic resilience, technological innovation, and inclusive sustainable development Nevertheless, the transition requires coordinated planning and a systems based approach rather than isolated investments in individual technologies
