One of the most important aspects of a child psychologist is to diagnose a situation or issue that affects a child's emotional health When a child is referred to a child psychologist for treatment, the first task is an initial patient assessment Various testing tools are used to determine the needs of a child's potential condition A child psychologist begins by meeting with the child and talking to establish a relationship The most important role of a child psychologist is to meet the child at his level This may include role playing, drawing or using toys and props Communicating with a child through the use of play is an effective way to build trust and help the child feel comfortable Often, the child psychologist receives evaluations from the school psychologist or counselor, which indicates the need for further evaluation
