Introduction: Diabetes, as a chronic disease, requires specific self care behaviors throughout life Psychological factors play an important role in adherence to self care programs among patients with diabetes The aim of the present study was to comprehensively review studies on the role of personality traits and coping strategies in self care of patients with diabetes Method: This study is a systematic review of the articles published in scientific research journals that were indexed in Scopus, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and SID databases from 2013 to 2023, based on the criteria of Newcastle and Ottawa Result: By examining the research conducted in this field, path analysis showed that neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness were able to predict self care behaviors in diabetic patients, and both emotion focused and problem focused coping strategies were able to moderate the relationships between personality traits and self care behaviors Conclusion: Coping strategies influence the relationship between personality traits and self care in diabetic patients The results of this study can be useful in preventive planning and identifying patients at high risk of poor adherence to self care programs and designing psychological interventions Also, research clearly shows that disease control increases with increasing patient participation in treatment and self care Therefore, it is recommended that interventional research be conducted on the effective and active role of clients in their own treatment and care for clients with other diseases It is worth noting that patient participation will have a positive impact on personal independence and self esteem, and increase the morale of clients
